The site of today’s Uzbekistan holds a large number of monuments of cultural heritage from over 400 centuries. Fine architectural monuments can still be found in Bukhara, Chiva, Samarkand and Tashkent as well as in other old towns. After the October Revolution all historic monuments were recognized to be the state property and covered by protection. In 1920 the Committee for the Protection of Monuments of History and Arts in Turkistan was brought to life. It got engaged with the organization of actions in the field of inventorying, research and protection of historic monuments in Central Asia. At present the following institutions deal with the problem of conservation: the Institute of Conservation attached to the Ministry of Culture in Uzbekistan, the Institute of Archaeology of Uzbek Academy of Science and the Institute of the History of Art. The eighties were the time of creating the Scientific, Research and Design Institute of the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments attached to the Ministry of Culture of the Uzbek SSR, which carries out scientific, research, design and conservation work in Central Asia. In 1980— 1985 the work of the Institute covered over 200 structures. They included a madrash of Bibi-Chanym, madrashes of Ulug-bega and Sher-Dor in Samarkand, a mosque of Kalian and a Mir-Arab madrash in Bukhara, a palace of Tash-Chauli and Ucz-Avlia mausoleum in Chiva and many other buildings. Of particular importance is the work carried out within the scope of the rehabilitation of a historic and architectural reserve of Itchan-Kala in Chiva. The Institute participates also in research and design work concerning architectural monuments found in other republics (Kazakhstan, Kirgiz Republic, Tadjikistan and Turkmen SSR).
