Abstracts

The study deals with a contrastive corpus analysis of the Finnish modal verb viitsiä, and its translation counterparts in English and Czech. Theoretically based on the concept of translation as a “semantic mirror” (Dyvik, 2004), it uses multilingual corpus data to identify shifts in meaning (Johansson, 2007). The results show that the negative imperative form älä viitsi shifts from a dynamic modal verb to a discourse marker in the parallel data from the subcorpora of subtitles, which is confirmed by its Czech (no tak, prosím tě) and English (come on, please) counterparts. Syntactic isolation, expansion of the semantic and pragmatic context and the loss of valence complementation by the A-infinitive suggest that a process of pragmaticalization of älä viitsi has begun.
