The paper discusses connotations of proper names from the point of view of their phrase-creative potential in a confrontative perspective. The following kinds of units containing deonymic components are discussed: units registered in phrase-graphic works, units bordering on phraseology and syntax, occasional units and paraphrased units. The focal point concentrates on the cross-linguistic equivalents of the units at issue, discussed and exemplified in the paper. The conclusion is that the equivalence relies heavily on the connotations of a given proper noun and the existence or lack of a given unit or model in the target language.
