Since the very beginning of the 1990s, both Soviet Union and Yugoslavia have been facing the danger of a violent breakdown. The purpose of this article is to present some common elements of the events, which occurred in those countries at that time, as well as to point out main differences in the policies of both governments, which made Soviet Union’s disintegration a relatively peaceful process, while for the Yugoslavia it turned into the brutal, civil war, which lasted for the next couple of years. The article also describes an engagement of Soviet Union in the process of seeking the resolution for the Yugoslavian conflict at its very early stage.
