The main impulse to write this article arose from my experience of working for one of the Polish local government institutions. Through the years of my professional activity I had the opportunity to become familiar with the phenomenon of local government, its structure and fundamental goals. But there is something else, what I believe, should be of interest for the potential reader of this paper. It is the language. The language used in the communication between the organizations of local government in the EU has its own specific which is to become the core of my scientific research. My article below should only give a small insight into the problem, here based on the example of Polish – German cooperation, seen from the perspective of a translator. The article touches upon the origin of local government and gives a brief over-view of its history in Poland and Germany. The further part of the article concerns some critical remarks on the language and typical problems in the translation process in this specific area.
