Macierzyństwo jest współcześnie jedną z najbardziej uniwersalnych i cenionych wartości społecznych. Przez wieki uznawane było za wyłączne doświadczenie kobiet heteroseksualnych. Obecnie mamy do czynienia z relatywnie szybkimi zmianami społeczno-kulturowymi, które włączają w obszar tych doświadczeń również kobiety określające się jako lesbijki. Artykuł dotyczy przyczyn oraz konsekwencji zjawiska nazywanego na Zachodzie „lesbian baby boom”, oznaczającego stosunkowo szybki wzrost liczby rodzin tworzonych przez homoseksualne kobiety wspólnie wychowujące dzieci. Przedstawiając społeczne aspekty tego zjawiska autorka skupia się najpierw na symboliczno-kulturowych relacjach pomiędzy homoseksualnością a rodzicielstwem, następnie zaś prezentuje motywacje oraz drogi lesbijek do macierzyństwa, rolę wsparcia społecznego w funkcjonowaniu rodzin nieheteronormatywnych oraz specyfikę struktury takich rodzin, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem funkcji matki niebiologicznej.

Maternity today is one of the most universal and highly rated social values. During the centuries it has been treated as an experience limited only to heterosexual women. Now we observe relatively fast socio-cultural changes that make this area of experience open also for women declaring to be lesbians. This article describes causes and consequences of the phenomenon called in the Western world as “lesbian baby boom” – a quick growth of families formed by homosexual women raising children together. The author focuses on socio-cultural relationship between homosexuality and parenthood and then presents lesbians’ motivations and ways to maternity, role of social support in functioning of non-heteronormative families, and specifics of such families’ structure with regard of a non-biological mother function.
