Tracking back the origins of locally used words and turns of phrases recorded in literature is important because diachronic linguistic research provides substantial and rather reliable information about the history of its speakers. Based on etymological findings, it is possible to outline both general as well as specific features of a dialect or a language. In many cases, other historical and linguistic evidence will help revise and clarify these basic findings. In this article, the origin of a word boroshnya ‘basket’ is analysed. The reconstructed semantic and word-formation relationships have a very archaic character, which explains the fact that the lexeme boroshnya lost its word-formation productivity. The author proposes a new explanation of the etymology of the noun boroshnya, arguing for a connection between this noun and the word boroshen’ ‘belongings’. The author proves that the word boroshnya has derived from the proto-form: *boršьno < *bhorģ-s-i-no- ‘to divide’, which means that the word boroshnya is of a Slavonic origin and was not borrowed from any other language.
