Jednym z głównych celów wyjazdów w obszarze turystyki kulturowej są miasta historyczne. Wyróżniają się one bogactwem kulturowego dziedzictwa, oferując na stosunkowo małej przestrzeni różnorodną ofertę kulturalno-turystyczną. Nierozstrzygniętym problemem pozostaje, w jaki sposób harmonijnie rozwijać w takich ośrodkach turystykę (siłą rzeczy: masową), chroniąc jednocześnie to, co turystów w te miejsca przyciąga, a więc dziedzictwo kulturowe. W tekście posłużono się przykładem Krakowa, z jednej strony najczęściej odwiedzanego miasta w Polsce, z drugiej – ośrodka, w którym braki we wdrażaniu polityki zrównoważonego rozwoju przyczyniają się na powolną degradację zasobu kulturowego.

One of the main destinations of cultural tourism are historic cities. They distinguish themselves because of their rich cultural heritage, proposing, within a relatively small space, varied cultural and tourist offer. It remains an unsolved problem how to develop tourism harmoniously in such centers ( perforce: mass) protecting at the same time what attracts tourist to these places, namely: cultural heritage. In the text is used the example of Krakow, the most often visited city in Poland and the centre where the lack of the implementation of balanced development policy contributes to slow degradation of the cultural resources.
