Niemal wszyscy egzegeci zauważają i podkreślają, że Apostoła Narodów łączyły, zwłaszcza z członkami Kościoła w Filippi, bardzo bliskie kontakty, które wielu z nich nie waha się nazywać przyjacielskimi. Typowymi wyrazami tej kościelnej przyjaźni były: osobiste odwiedzanie, wysyłanie posłańców (Tymoteusz, Epafrodyt) i listy. W Flp wspomniany został ponadto jeden, niezwykły i wiele mówiący znak przyjaźni, którym było prowadzenie wspólnego finansowego konta (rachunek dawania i brania, Flp 4,15). Paweł widzi w tym ostatnim wyrazie, nie tylko oczywisty znak zaufania, ale również wyraz przyjaźni, gdzie obie zaprzyjaźnione strony zmierzają w kierunku dobra i szczęścia dla strony przeciwnej. Z jednej strony Kościół z Filippi cieszy się, że przyczynia się do radości Pawła, który może skutecznie, dzięki finansowej pomocy, głosić Ewangelię. Z drugiej strony Paweł cieszy się, że Filipianie zyskują „niebieskie dywidendy” ze względu na okazaną pomoc.

Paul has friendships with the members of the church in Philippi. This can be seen in some personal visits (about 4), in sending envoys (Timothy, Epaphrodytus), in letters and in accordance to Phil 4:15-17, in modern terms, a joint account. In this last sign Paul sees not only a sign of confidence, but also the expression of true friendship. True friends want good things for others and are happy when they make them happy. The Philippians helped the apostle concretely, on the one hand in his missionary activity and this is a first reason for the apostle´s joy. On the other hand - that is what Paul particularly emphasizes - he is pleased that the Philippians in spite of their material aid finally don´t lose anything because they receive heavenly dividends, i.e. they grow spiritually. One can therefore say that the apostle of the Gentiles sees a special act of friendship in giving and taking, what helps him specifically and enriches the Philippians spiritually
