The battle for the fort I /1 „Łysiczka”, which took place during the first siege of the Fortress Przemyśl in October 1914, is considered to be the most famous struggle for permanent fortifications on the Eastern front during WW1. In the course of a general attack on the Fortress, at dawn on October 7, the Russians managed to break into the fort, but after several hours of heavy fighting, Austro-Hungarian troops managed to defeat them. The article discusses the differences that can be found in the non-Hungarian and Hungarian literature in terms of commanding the defense of the fort. In the non-Hungarian literature (German, Austrian and Polish) it is widely accepted that the officer most responsible for defending the fort was Lieutenant of Artillery Janko Švrljuga, but in the interwar Hungarian literature it is assumed that the main contribution to the defense of the fort laid on 2nd lieutenant, István Bielek. Without prejudging the veracity of any of the versions, the article aims to show how the two versions were developed and what factors could have influenced this process.
