Artykuł przedstawia w skrócie historię nauczania języków orientalnych na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim i powstania biblioteki orientalistycznej oraz zakres tematyki księgozbioru. Autorka wyjaśnia na wybranych przykładach, niektóre problemy występujące przy opisie bibliograficznym publikacji w językach orientalnych, a wynikające z odmiennych systemów pisma czy różnic kulturowych, utrudniających jednoznaczne stosowanie zasad powszechnych w bibliotekarstwie europejskim.

The article outlines the history of teaching oriental languages and organizing the oriental library at the Jagiellonian University, and presents the thematic scope of the library’s collection. On selected examples, the author explains some of the issues connected with bibliographic description of publications in oriental languages: these problems are due to different writing systems and to cultural differences which hinder using clear-cut rules commonly used in European librarianship.
