The spiritual life of the Eastern Church is characterized by a great variety of forms, among which monasticism is the most perfect one. Monasteries were always a source of spiritual life and therefore a foundation of Christianity. They influenced the policy of the state. Rulers treated monks as people of unquestionable authority. The influence of monastic centers in Greece spread to Central and Eastern Europe. Through their rich spirituality and influence on the cultural and religious life of this part of Europe monasteries became an inseparable part of the history of the countries from the Byzantine-Slavic cultural group. Just as the culture of Western Europe formed under the influence of cities and universities, in eastern Europe monasteries were of paramount importance. Renowned specialists in Orthodox monastic history from many European scientific institutions were asked to take part in the conference “The specific character of monastic life of eastern Christianity in central-eastern Europe”. The aim of the panel is to draw attention to the specific features of eastern monastic life and show its role in the religious life of the inhabitants of central-eastern Europe. We would like to present this problem in many aspects. The organizers would like to emphasize the relations between Eastern and Western monasticism in central-eastern Europe. To show these relations is a very important task, as they are the wealth of the whole Christian society. The participants of the conference will take up the problem of defining the place of eastern monasticism in forming the civilization of this region of Europe.
