Kult świętych rozwijał się bardzo żywo od początku chrześcijaństwa. Wyraża się on w trzech formach: veneratio – cześć oddawana świętym; imitatio – naśladowanie przykładu ich życia; invocatio – przyzywanie ich wstawiennictwa, które zawsze zmierza do Ojca uwielbionego w swoich świętych. Najpełniej dokonuje się to w liturgii, a więc także w Liturgii godzin. Jakże zatem ważne stało się odpowiednie przygotowanie tekstów i melodii do odnowionej po Soborze Watykańskim II Liturgii godzin, której częścią stały się liturgiczne wspomnienia, święta i uroczystości świętych Pańskich oraz teksty wspólne o świętych. Element konstytutywny dwóch zasadniczych godzin kanonicznych, Jutrzni i Nieszporów, obok czytania, psalmodii i modlitwy, stanowią hymny, których teksty należało na nowo przejrzeć i przygotować według zasad opracowanych przez specjalnie utworzoną do tego celu Grupę Studyjną Cœtus VII. Pełny zestaw hymnów w posoborowej Liturgii godzin osiągnął niespotykaną dotąd liczbę 291 utworów. Przekładu na język polski większości hymnów do Liturgii godzin dokonał P. Galiński. Oczywiście, zgodnie z zaleceniami Kongregacji Rytów, po ukazaniu się Liturgii godzin w języku polskim, należało dołożyć starań, by ułożono do niej odpowiednie melodie, szczególnie do części z natury swojej przeznaczonych do śpiewu, a więc m.in. hymnów. W niniejszym artykule zostały poddane analizie teksty i melodie hymnów o świętych na dwie najważniejsze godziny kanoniczne, Jutrznię i Nieszpory, jakie zostały wydane w hymnarzu zatytułowanym Wybrane hymny na Jutrznię i Nieszpory, opracowanym pod redakcją s. J. M. Bujalskiej PDDM i autorki niniejszego artykułu. Wydano go w 2012 r. z inicjatywy Zgromadzenia Sióstr Uczennic Boskiego Mistrza. Obok hymnów liturgicznych w omawianym przez nas zbiorze zostały zamieszczone także pieśni kościelne o świętych, które można wykonać w miejsce hymnu. Przegląd i analiza tekstów hymnów o świętych doprowadziła do wniosków, że nie wszystkie reguły dobrze skomponowanego hymnu, wypracowane przez Cœtus VII, zostały zastosowane w tekstach hymnicznych o świętych, zamieszczonych w polskim wydaniu księgi Liturgii godzin. Z kolei prezentacja kompozycji o świętych zawartych w zbiorze Wybrane hymny na Jutrznię i Nieszpory wykazała ogromne bogactwo form oraz stylów muzycznych, jakie one reprezentują. Z jednej strony ujawniła charakterystyczne dla polskiej twórczości liturgicznej silne odniesienia do romantycznych pieśni ludowych oraz mocne przywiązanie do skal diatonicznych, z drugiej ukazała podejmowane przez kompozytorów próby nawiązywania do współczesnej stylistyki muzycznej. To wszystko daje szerokie spektrum patrzenia na współczesną twórczość liturgiczną oraz pozwala wyznaczyć jej nowe drogi rozwoju.

The cult of saints has been developing very vividly since the beginning of Christianity. It is expressed in three forms: veneratio – worship of the saints; imitatio – imitation of the example of their lives; invocatio – invocation of their intercession, which always leads to the Father glorified in his saints. This is most fully done in the liturgy, and thus also in the Liturgy of the Hours. Therefore, it was important to prepare the texts and melodies for the Liturgy of the Hours, renewed after the Second Vatican Council, which included liturgical memories, feasts and feasts of the Lord’s saints and common texts on saints. The constitutive element of the two basic canonical hours, Matins and Vespers, apart from reading, psalmody and prayer, are the hymns, the texts of which had to be reviewed and prepared according to the rules developed by the specially created Cœtus VII Study Group. The full set of hymns in the post-conciliar Liturgy of the Hours reached an unprecedented number of 291 songs. Most of the hymns of the Liturgy of the Hours were translated into Polish by P. Galiński. Of course, according to the recommendations of the Congregation of Rites, after the publication of the Liturgy of the Hours in the Polish language, it was necessary to make every effort to arrange appropriate melodies for it, especially for the parts intended by nature for singing, such as hymns. This article analyses the texts and melodies of the hymns about saints for the two most important canonical hours: Matins and Vespers, published in Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, edited by s. J. M. Bujalska PDDM and s. M. D. Nowak PDDM. It was published in 2012 on the initiative of the Disciples of the Divine Master. In addition to the liturgical hymns, the collection discussed here also includes church songs about saints, which can be performed in place of the hymn. The review and analysis of the hymns on saints led to the conclusion that not all the rules of a well composed hymn, developed by Cœtus VII, were applied in the hymn texts on saits, published in the Polish edition of the Book Liturgy of the Hours. In turn, the presentation of compositions about saints included in the collection Selected hymns for Matins and Vespers, showed a huge richness of forms and musical styles that they represent. On the one hand, it revealed strong references to romantic folk songs and a strong attachment to diatonic scales, which are characteristic of Polish liturgical work. On the other hand, it revealed the attempts of composers to refer to contemporary music stylistics. All this gives a wide spectrum of views on contemporary liturgical work and allows us to set new paths for its development.
