Artykuł przedstawia Karola Skałkę i jego zbiór archiwalnych fotografii. Karol Skałka urodził się 14 sierpnia 1928 r. w Cieszynie. W latach 1947-1952 studiował chemię we Wrocławiu. W lutym 1950 r. został asystentem Zakładu Chemii Wydziału Stomatologii, a trzy miesiące później asystentem Zakładu Chemii Fizjologicznej Wydziału Lekarskiego Akademii Medycznej we Wrocławiu. Dyplom magistra chemii uzyskał w czerwcu 1952 r. i podjął wtedy pracę w laboratorium Szpitala Śląskiego w Cieszynie. W latach 1958-1996 kierował pracownią fotograficzną w tym szpitalu i gromadził fotograficzną dokumentację medyczną. Jego zdjęcia zostały wykorzystane w wielu pracach naukowych. Fotografia była jego pasją. Interesował się architekturą Szpitala Śląskiego (poprzednio: Evangelischen Allgemeines Krankenhaus der Gemeinde in Teschen, Schlesisches Krankenhaus) i ludźmi z nim związanymi. Jego kolekcja fotografii składa się ze 191 obiektów przedstawiających: archiwalne plany szpitala, jego budynki, pokoje pacjentów i personel medyczny. Zbiór obejmuje okres od 1889, kiedy szpital powstał, do lat 1990-tych.

This article presents Karol Skałka and his collection of photos. Karol Skałka was born in 14th August 1928 in the town of Cieszyn. In 1947-1952 he studied chemistry in Wroclaw. Since February 1950 he became an assistant at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Dentistry and three months later he change this job to take the same position at the Department of Physiological Chemistry of the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy in Wrocław. He received Master’s degree in Chemistry in June 1952 and started to work in a laboratory of the Silesian Hospital in Cieszyn. In 1958-1996 he mana­ged a photographic studio at the hospital and collected photographic medical records. His works were used in many scientific studies. His passion as an art of photography. He was interested in architecture of the Silesian Hospital in Cieszyn (formerly: Evangelischen Allgemeines Krankenhaus der Gemeinde in Teschen, Schlesisches Krankenhaus) and his supporters and employees. His collection consists with 191 images presenting: archival plans of the hospital, hospital buildings, chambers for patients, and the hospital staff. The collection covers the period from 1889, when the hospital was established, to the 1990s.
