In the late Autumn 2010 a small piece of bronze necklace was accidentally found near the Niemcowizna vil¬lage (the Suwałki region). In April 2011 the expedition of IA UW carried out test excavations there. very soon small pieces of cremated human bones were found. The rainy weather made sifting impossible, so it was decided to excavate a very small trench (1x1 m) only to recognise the stratigraphy. It was realised that the site was strongly destroyed by mechanical ploughing. Cremated human bones, pieces of pottery and metal artefacts were discovered only in the humus layer. In result of prospection with metal detectors made outside the trench, 195 artefacts were found. Most of them were bronze pieces of jewellery (fragments of necklaces, brooches and bracelets). Based on the artefacts we can date the cemetery in general to the 10th— 11th c., although it is possible that it was also used later.
