Powieść Katherine Dunn Geek Love z 1989 roku opisuje dzieje rodziny „nuklearnej”, to jest dwupokoleniowej, w przeszłości prowadzącej objazdowy cyrk. Narratorką jest jedna z występujących niegdyś w cyrku sióstr, która, wspominając szczęśliwe dzieciństwo, roztacza opiekę nad niedołężną matką i nad córką, nieświadomą cyrkowych dziejów swojej rodziny. Zaproponowana w tekście lektura tej powieści nawiązuje do kategorii różnicy paradoksalnie rozumianej jako podstawa podobieństwa między ludźmi, którzy różnią się między sobą w stopniu nieprzyswajalnym, ale mogą dawać świadectwo tej różnicy.

Katherinne Dunn’s 1989 novel Geek Love tells the story of a “nuclear” family (composed of parents and their children,) who used to operate a travelling circus. It is narrated by the founder’s daughter, who reminisces about her happy childhood as she looks after her senile mother and a daughter who remains unaware of the family’s past. A reading of the novel proposed herein puts forth that the category difference paradoxically becomes the basis for a sense of commonality: although the differences between people may be irreducible, people can give testimony to those differences.
