Odpowiedź na pytanie, czy gdyby raport Beveridge’a był pisany dzisiaj, rekomendowałby bezwarunkowy dochód podstawowy(BDP) nie była oczywista podczas debaty w London School of Economics. Zwolennik pomysłu BDP Philippe Van Parijs zaprezentował ten konceptjako odpowiedź na pięć gigantów zła sformułowanych przez Beveridge’a. Sposób, w jaki doświadczamy tych problemów dzisiaj, różni się oddoświadczeń ludzi żyjących w latach 40. XX wieku. Biedni pracujący są największymi beneficjentami tego rozwiązania, gdyż BDP daje im szanse,by byli bezczynni w sensie nieakceptowania złych warunków pracy, a szukania pracy, która jest dla nich bardziej znacząca. Nie ma drzewa pieniędzyw Matriksie, a liczby mówią same za siebie – podkreślał John Kay, stojący w opozycji do omawianej koncepcji. Aby mieć bezwarunkowy dochódpodstawowy na poziomie stanowiącym alternatywę do zatrudnienia w Wielkiej Brytanii, należałoby podnieść podatki o połowę.

The answer for the question if the Beveridge report was being written today, would it recommend a basic income was not obviousduring the debate organized by London School of Economics. The supporter of an unconditional basic income idea, Philippe van Parijs, presentedthis concept as an answer to Beveridge’s five giant evil. The way it manifests itself nowadays is different from the way it was experienced inforties of 20th century. Working poor are the greatest beneficiaries of this solution as unconditional basic income gives them a chance to be idlein a sense of rejecting bad working conditions and looking for a job that is more meaningful for them. However, there are problems with puttingthe idea of basic income into practice. There is no matrix money tree and numbers simply do not add – emphasised John Kay standing in oppositionto this concept. In order to have a basic income that is a real alternative for employment for any number of people in Great Britain, there is a need to raise taxes by half.
