Czudec, whose origin is connected with an early medieval Cistercian settlement, is at present a relatively wellpreserved example of a small wooden town. A residential burgher’s house stood in the marketplace until 1991・ This was a timber building with a roof partially supported by a framework of the wall and partially by free-standing pillars. It had probably been raised in the eighteenth century, and could be included among the most interesting monuments of small town edifices in Poland not only due to its origin but, above all, owing to the details of its archaic construction. The helplessness of the conservation services and a wavering public and professional opinion had created a situation in which the house was pulled down, although for many years efforts were made to commence its restoration. During the last period of its existence, the material of the object had succumbed to far-reaching degradation. It was no longer feasible to plan restoration since the latter would have involved the replacement of 80-90 per cent of the timberwork. In this situation, restitution could have taken the place of reconstruction. This would have meant the inclusion into a new edifice of the greatest possible number of not so much the original elements of the structure as their outer shells which bear the mark of the passage of time and various rebuildings, and which offer reliable and suggestive information about the devastated object. The recreated solid with an eventually reconstructed arcade, suggested by existing iconography, could have ultimately contained information about the construction system, as well as the outer face of the former walls, some of the pillars upholding the roof and a considerable part of the carpentry. There was a chance that suitably performed work would have made it possible to retain the documentary function of the edifice and the atmosphere created by it.
