We hope you successfully stay healthy and cherish your professional and scientific pas¬sions as well as passions connected with your individual interests in the field of herit¬age. As if against the difficult time with which we have to confront, we hand over to our Readers the new issue of “Ochrona Zabytków”. This is the issue which has been created in the conditions of increasingly stronger familiarising with awareness that an extraordinary situation of threats to our health will not disappear as if by magic. The awareness of this kind accompanies many fields of our life. It reflects in the economic situation, education; it reaches cultural centres, museums or historical places – popular touristic destinations – formerly visited in crowds and today deserted. This is the time of reflection and search¬ing for new forms of activity. It is very clearly visible in the case of historical towns and complexes which constitute background for industries of free time as designated by global consumerism. Nowadays, historical scenographies, devoid of commotion and colours of the crowd, explicitly show that in many cases we lost genius loci; that routes of local com¬munities and places – historical towns – have gone in different directions. Current empti¬ness is a silent twinge for relinquishing the initiative to tour operators and enterprises of „fast money” generation; for eliminating the models of contemplative, participatory or neighbouring presence in the historical surroundings. Commercialised space has become nobody’s area (heritage without heirs), which is very clearly visible in the era of locked hotels and restaurants. The pandemic time gives us the chance of searching the answers for the following ques¬tions: How do we save localism? How do we preserve the privacy and cosiness of historical environment, historical landscapes? How do we regain – for local communities – the bond with historical centres of towns where today the wind blows substituting tourists? In this context, especially these places appear interesting in which social involvement and pres¬ence of heritage depositaries remained alive. Examples of Tarnowskie Góry, UNESCO World Heritage Site, or Srebrna Góra, historical monument of Poland, where local associations and groups of enthusiasts shape the image and fate of the place, show alternative ways of mod¬ern heritage functioning. These ways are rough – they require skills and involvement – but are important, as indigenous, rooted in the local tradition and community. We encourage you to observe and, most of all, support initiatives, such as the activity of the Association of Ziemia Tarnogórska Enthusiasts for saving and maintenance of the unique cultural site, i.e. local monuments of ore mining. In the scale of the country, there are certainly many examples of such initiatives and involvement. The pandemic time is a period when similar initiatives are more distinctive. On the other hand, this is the time of trial for organisations and activists. This is the time when the notion of social protection and guardianship of historical monuments assumes new importance. Such activity deserves noticing, reflection and support. There is some hope that the upheaval will reveal – to policymakers and theo¬reticians – even more evidently the importance of the presence of residents, local creators and heirs of the cultural heritage. After all, revealed threats of total commercialisation and globalisation can be pushed away and minimised – still in the name of the cultural variety and sustainable growth. The extraordinary situation of pandemic danger leads to lifestyle changes as well. Meet¬ings, away seminars and face to face relations have been substituted by teleconferences, webinars and all kinds of contacts based on electronic media. You can read about one of such remarkably great webinars within the account presented in the current issue of “Ochrona Zabytków”. The question arises if the development of the skill to explore the world remotely, to analyse and experience the contact with a historical monument remotely is the next step of evolution. Do electronic media substitute business trips, examination of objects, their contemplation at different times of the day and in different weather condi¬tions? It seems that this change will not come immediately because for time being the fear of the pandemic buffets not less than the limitation of wandering and meeting possibilities. However, once activated mechanisms and revealed possibilities of remote access will influ¬ence the civilisational transformations. The function of humanists, specialists in the field of protection of cultural sites, and in other fields connected with the cultural heritage, com¬prises registration and commenting of ongoing changes, started processes. The editorial team of “Ochrona Zabytków” hopes that a harvest of such observations and considerations will be also reflected in texts directed to the columns of our journal. Dear Readers deserve some words about the situation of the journal as well. We can joyously confirm that we have been ranked into the group of journals which are indexed and perceived by the Scopus basis. We hope it will be a breakthrough in our efforts to get ministerial points. Perhaps, an argument „abroad” will overweigh our national scales of marks… From our perspective, signals are important concerning the reception of the journal in an environment for which it is created. In this context, we note – with great satisfaction – a pleasant remark about our activity presented in “Biuletyn Informacyjny PKN ICOMOS” (No 3-4/50-51/2020). This satisfaction is even greater because Marek Konopka, the persis¬tent Editor of Biuletyn PKN ICOMOS, was involved for many years in creation and editing important specialised journals, which causes that he is a strict judge in this field. Thank you for the kind word! At the same time, we congratulate Mr Mark Konopka for receiving this year’s Prof. Jan Zachwatowicz award! After all, the prize granted for outstanding achieve¬ments in the field of the cultural heritage protection by the General Heritage Protection Officer and Polish National Committee ICOMOS belongs to the most prestigious distinc¬tions in the environment of conservators. The condition of our journal results from efforts of Authors, Reviewers and a large group of people who participate in the editorial work. Special attention and thanks should be expressed for Ms Laura Bakalarska and Mr Tadeusz Sadowski, editors – for a long time – of “Ochrona Zabytków”. Their work contribution, reliability and involvement constituted for many years the foundation of editorial activities and journal quality. In connection with the termination of their work in the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, and in the name of the Editoral Team, we express the highest appreciation and gratitude to them for the participation in creating the journal. The editorial achievements of Ms Laura Bakalarska and Mr Tadeusz Sadowski can be defined without a hint of exaggeration as permanent and valuable contribution in shaping the common cultural heritage. Thank you! We encourage to read the new issue of the journal in which Dear Readers will find, among others, two articles concerning the latest research on valuable architectural monuments. Krystian Zalewski discusses the history of construction transformations of the medieval church in Karlino; Maciej Prarat and Beata Piaskowska present the results of architectural research of the church located in the 17th century monastery complex in Kar¬czówka, Kielce. Two articles connected with the analysis of historical cultural landscapes are recommendable as well: Roman Marcinek from the Krakow Regional Office of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage discusses the unusual and unknown more widely residence Dzięki; Dorota Hryszkiewicz-Kahlau and Michał Klugmann, team of authors from Gdańsk, present the subject matter on the border of issues of the technical monument and garden art, discussing the landscape composition beside the former Municipal Hospital of Gdańsk. The next group of subjects concerns the issues of heritage management. Bogusław Szmygin, Anna Fortuna-Marek and Andrzej Siwek present characteristics of already imple¬mented management of a historical town, according to the Management Plan of the Old Town in Zamość; Wojciech Malesa comments synthetically procedures of granting the sub¬sidies for historical monuments. We recommend to focus the special attention on state¬ments included in this issue of “Ochrona Zabytków”. Włodzimierz Herycz, for many years a director of the historical reserve in Zhovkva (Ukraine), describes – from the position of a participant of activities – the difficult process of protection and revitalisation of the royal castle in Zhovkva. This is valuable addition to the current information about the contem¬porary fate of the monument which from the Polish historical perspective belongs to unu¬sually precious objects, deeply embedded in the history and national culture. The account elaborated by Marta Elas on the webinar “The Invincible city” constitutes the testimony of contemporary times and – simultaneously – the record of the greatly important meeting with an international rank. It was the event connected with two anniversaries – 75 years from the time of the Warsaw Old Town rebuilding and the 40th anniversary of the entry of the Warsaw historical centre on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Recollection of unique¬ness of the Warsaw postwar rebuilding and social involvement in this process became a starting point for the analysis concerning modern problems of rebuilding. You can read about details of the particular opinions and discussion in the attached presentation. We invite you and wish you inspiring reading! Andrzej Siwek Editor-in-Chief
