On 29th September 2017, President of NIK Krzysztof Kwiatkowski presented the Sejm, i.e. the lower house of the Polish Parliament, with the Report on the Activity of the Supreme Audit Office in 2016. In 2016, NIK conducted 2,263 audits that comprised 1,869 entities. The areas of key importance to the citizens’ lives and the State’s functioning were examined during 105 planned audits, and additionally 116 ad hoc audits were carried out in response to information about serious irregularities. As every year, the state budget execution in 2016 was also examined. Within this audit, the expenditure of over 100 institutions was checked, including ministries, central offices and selected local institutions. The President of NIK also presented the Members of the Parliament with the information on NIK’s international activities, related, among others, to the audits of the Council of Europe and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), as well as the functioning of the JASPERS initiative which is aimed at supporting projects that apply for financing from the European Union’s funds.
