Pod koniec lat 80. XX wieku teologia wyzwolenia została poddana gruntownej krytyce dogmatycznej przez oficjalne instancje Kościoła katolickiego, które jednocześnie faworyzowały wyłaniającą się właśnie „teologię indygenistyczną” (teologia india). Mimo to w ciągu lat 70. i 80. teologia wyzwolenia miała istotny wpływ na ideologię i na praktykę pracy misyjnej wśród paragwajskich Indian. Znaczącą rolę w tym względzie odegrali ojcowie Bartomeu Meliá SJ i José Seelwische OMI, którzy, dokonując radykalnej interpretacji dekretów Soboru Watykańskiego II oraz tez tzw. Dokumentu z Barbados (1971), zredefiniowali paradygmat pracy misyjnej wsród Indian podczas Konsulty w Asunción w roku 1972, a następnie koordynowali wprowadzenie tych postanowień w życie poprzez instytucję Narodowego Zespołu ds. Misji (ENM) – organu doradczego Konferencji Biskupów Paragwaju.

In the late 1980s the liberation theology underwent a comprehensive dogmatic evaluation by the relevant, official bodies of the Catholic Church, which clearly favoured the then just emerging indigenous theology (teologia india). Despite this, the liberation theology has exercised a considerable influence on the theory and practice of the missionary work among the Indians in Paraguay. One of the key figures in this regard were Frs Bartomeu Meliá SJ and José Seelwische OMI, who have performed a radical reinterpretation of the decrees of the Second Vatican Council and the Declaration of Barbados of 1971, redefined the paradigm of the missionary work among the Indians at the Consulta in Asunción in 1972, and oversaw their implementation through the National Missions Team (ENM), an advisory board of the Paraguayan Episcopal Conference.
