Ośrodki miejskie poszukują skutecznych sposobów przyspieszania rozwoju gospodarczego miasta. Szansę rozwoju dostrzegają w organizacji wielkich wydarzeń (mega-events). Ich przygotowanie wymaga jednak przeznaczenia z budżetu miasta znacznych środków pieniężnych na różnego rodzaju inwestycje. Dlatego często stawia się pytanie o sens ich ponoszenia lub zasadność organizacji wielkich wydarzeń przez ośrodki miejskie. Przedmiotem badań są wydatki publiczne Gminy Miejskiej Kraków przeznaczone na inwestycje infrastrukturalne związane z przygotowaniami do organizacji Mistrzostw Europy w Piłce Nożnej EURO 2012. Celem badań jest przedstawienie korzyści ekonomicznych, które wiążą się bezpośrednio z organizacją wielkich wydarzeń. Zakres badań dotyczy przedsięwzięć inwestycyjnych powiązanych z EURO 2012, realizowanych na terenie miasta Krakowa w latach 2004–2012. Wyniki badań wyjaśniają znaczenie inwestycji w kontekście przygotowań do organizacji wielkich wydarzeń. Inwestycje są zmienną obrazującą bezpośrednie efekty ekonomiczne (direct economic impact) organizacji EURO 2012. Ich uruchomienie przynosi szereg korzyści ekonomicznych. Artykuł stanowi głos w dyskusji nad zasadnością uwzględnienia wielkich wydarzeń w strategii rozwoju miasta.

Urban centres are usually searching for effective means of accelerating local economic growth. Many perceive the hosting of major events as sources of such acceleration. However, preparations for such events involve significant municipal expenditures for investment purposes. This leads to the question of whether such events are worth the expense. The research subject in this case is the cost borne by the Urban Township of Kraków on behalf of infrastructure investment projects associated with the organization of the EURO 2012 European Football Championships. The purpose of the paper is to show the economic benefits directly associated with the organisation of major events in the city. The research area is the city of Kraków and its investment projects associated with the organisation of EURO 2012. The study period is the years 2004–2012. The research results help explain the economic significance of investment projects associated with preparations for major events hosted by the city of Kraków. The goal here is to assess the direct economic impact of EURO 2012 on the city. The economic benefits are discussed in the paper, which serves as a voice in the discussion of the sense of including major events in the development strategy of a city.
