The preservation of the past depends upon human attitudes. Ignorance of the fragility of our cultural heritage — and indifference to its fate — contributes to its ultimate loss. The environmental movement has helped us recognize that clean air and water and the preservation of our forests are not abstract virtues — but critical to the quality of our lives. A similar case must now be made for our cultural heritage. We can physically survive its loss only at a tremendous cost. But should the preservation of the cultural heritage encompass reconstruction ? Serious ethical issues arise. The Getty Conservation Institute addresses these and other issues with public and private institutions to make conservation a priority and provide a heritage of which we can all be proud.
