The concept of alayavijnana belongs to the most original and interesting ideas of Mahayana Buddhism philosophy. It was invented to resolve the theoretical problems of Abhidharmic philosophy of mind. In the classical yogacara philosophy alayavijnana is an unconscious level of mind that exits even when conscious activity temporarily ceases. The origin, development and variants of the alayavijnana concept are discussed in the text.
