The paper presents foreign students, American citizens, who applied for government grants to study at the Jagiellonian University in the years 1946-1950. Based on the research in the University Archives, the article presents applicants for the Polish and US Governments’ grants. It describes their applications, CVs and other documents. The paper also discusses the procedure of awarding the grants as well as the transfer of official letters from the Ministry of Education to the University. Although there were a lot of candidates, often of Polish origin, who wanted to return to the country of their fathers at least for the time of studying, in fact the studies were taken up by few. The main reasons were problems with finding accommodation and meager grant money, insufficient to support oneself. American citizens would receive grants from the Polish Ministry of Education. Some were awarded grants with the right to teach and were employed as English language instructors at the University. The number of applications to the Jagiellonian University, large in the late 1940s, gradually decreased, no doubt as a result of political changes in Poland.
