Since the era of Perestroika in the USSR and further democratic transformation in the countries which appeared after its breakdown, the Poles in the East have been enabled to confess to their Polish origin and organize themselves as the national minority. A great interest in cooperation with Polish NGOs, whose activity (defined in their statutes) was aimed at, inter alia, promoting the so-called Polishness (the ideas and information connected with the Polish history, culture and other aspects) in areas inhabited by people of the Polish origin, has aroused. The Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (ZHP) is one such organization. Since 1990 the organizational units of ZHP have undertaken active cooperation with the Polish communities in the East organizing camps, training courses and rallies.
