The following paper is a review article. It is an attempt to analyze the lifestyles of people with intellectual disabilities and the changes that are occuring in the forms of support they are provided with and in the places where this support is provided. The discussion on deinstitutionalization and normalization (approached from various perspectives and ordered chronologically) concentrates on how people with intellectual disabilities function, on the subjective and objective evaluation of their lives, and on social inclusion. Available research results on the subject were used to analyze both processes.
