This paper investigates the relationships between the phenomenon of underemployment in Poland – defined as a non-standard form of employment, particularly as work on fixed- term contracts – and familisation – considered as an increase of an individual’s dependence on family, maximization of the family’s control over the economic resources of an individual and dependence on family or marital ties. The main hypothesis predicts that extension of labor market segmentation will lead to an increase in the family’s role among workers on the secondary labor market, who are deprived of stable employment and without chances of promotion. In other words, for many people the response to the uncertainty of our times is not the welfare state or the market but a close family. The intensity of family’s support among employees on the secondary labor market will be explored in reference to child care and financial transfers within informal networks. The analysis is based on the EU-SILC data from 2008.
