Similarly to patterns of intergenerational mobility, patterns of assortative mating are assumed to indicate the ease or difficulty with which individuals are able to cross social strata. The aim of the research presented in this paper was to explore whether any significant changes in friendship patterns took place since 1988 and to what extent they were followed by social openness in marital choices. To examine trends in assortative mating the authors used the POLPAN data from 1988, 2003, and 2008. Loglinear analysis was applied to assess: (i) degree of association between educational level/occupational category of respondents and their best acquaintances’, (ii) patterns of barriers to friendship, and (iii) variation in homogamy for acquaintances with the same education and occupational category. Research revealed that in 2008 the strength of association between occupational categories of respondents and their friends was lower than in 1988. Still lower was the association between occupational categories of husbands and wives. These findings suggest that the last 20 years saw an increase of societal openness, or - at least - that in 2008 social stratification was more open if compared with stratification data for the period narrowly preceding the collapse of the Communist system. The decline in the strength of association was paralleled by the decrease in both amicable and marital homogamy, with the most remarkable decline taking place in the category of higher level managers and professionals which may suggests that intelligentsia was more open in 2008.
