The first military census of the population of Galicia carried out in 1773 offers a unique insight into the demographic and economic potential of the territory annexed by Austria-Hungary after the First Partition of Poland (1772). The value of the Austrian acquisitions depended as a rule on their agriculture, which was by no means underdeveloped. If the former Voivodeship of Ruthenia (Lwów) topped the list with its huge royal estates (eg. the Sambor and Drohobycz landed estates) and minerals (eg. salt), it was closely followed by some regions on the right bank of the Vistula in the Voivodeships of Cracow and Sandomierz (eg. the county of Zator-Oswiecim)
