In onymia treated as a whole, that is, the set of all groups and categories of proper names in a given country, one can observe two parallel tendencies: 1) processes tending to give onymia an international character, 2) maintaining a local indigenous autonomy of proper names. The second tendency predominates in many categories of proper names; these are, in particular, names that developed long ago, traditional names. The processes of globalization are observed in Poland and other Slavic countries primarily in names of new commercial objects and companies, and in Internet names: nicks and rooms. A relatively small percentage of given names participates in the most recent wave of globalization. True globalization of given names did occur in the past, during the expansion of Christianity.
