The Knyszyn landscape is often embellished with roadside crosses and shrines. They were erected to mark different occasions, such as periods of natural disasters and epidemics. Caravaca crosses are typical elements of the Knyszyn landscape. A Caravaca cross, also called a choleric or Saint Benedict cross, comes from the 16th century from the city of Caravaca in Spain. During plagues it spread east. It was popular in Poland at the end of the 18th century and spread on in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th centuries. It was erected to protect a city against another epidemic. 'Caravaca ' usually has 7 little crosses and 18 letters; it is a double-cross-barred crucifix. Knyszyn is surrounded by such crosses. Most roadside objects of religious cult in Knyszyn municipality come from the end of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author hopes that this article will enrich the research on the history and ethnography of Knyszyn municipality.
