The main building of the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra was erected in 1912-1914 upon the initiative of Riesengebirgs=Verein, a society active in Jelenia Góra since 1880, which financed the undertaking. At the time, this was a modern edifice, specially designed for museum purposes by Karl Grosser. Up to 1945 the building fulfilled the functions of a typically German Heimatmuseum. After the war, in 1945-1947 it housed the works of art and museum exhibits of the Head Office of Museums in Warsaw. The Museum was officially opened as the Jan Matejko Municipal Museum on 3 May 1945. During then 1960s and the first half of the 1970s it was a typical, small institution known as the District Museum in Jelenia Góra. No extensive repairs or modernisation were conducted during this period. The Museum flourished after the establishment of the voivodeship of Jelenia Góra. Not only did it change its name to the Regional Museum in Jelenia Góra, but the multiplication of its functions, tasks and funds rendered possible a dynamic increase of the number of purchased exhibits (i. a. glass ware, paintings by Wlastimil Hofman, graphic art, crafts, etc.), which, in turn, produced an urgent need for immediate improvements. The 1977-1981 period witnessed the emergence of numerous projects of expanding the Museum but not a single one was realised. In 1987-1989, the Regional Museum in Jelenia Góra took over a number of architectural monuments in Szklarska Poreba and Jelenia Góra, which after years-long repairs, carried out until 1995, were adapted for museum purposes. This, however, did not resolve the basic problem, namely, a complete redesigning of the main building. The growing collections, the need for periodic repairs, and the lack of adaptation to the requirements of the end of the twentieth century and the early twenty first century call for an immediate alteration of the Museum's appearance. The functional conception of the Karkonosze Museum was devised in the years 2005-2006. In the middle of 2006 it was included as a priority into the Long-term Investment Programme for the Voivodeship of Lower Silesia. The architectural conception of the Museum's expansion came into being at the beginning of 2007. This project foresees revolutionary transformations, which are to lead the Museum into the twenty first century and place it among the most modern institutions of its size in Poland.
