The paper shows very briefly a fascinating story of the long-lived subject of the 'nayika-bheda', taking as the telling example the 'abhisarika' category. The 'Natya-sastra' is the earliest source mentioning different types of 'nayikas' and 'nayakas'. The association of god Indra (Mind) and the 'nayaka' of each and every performance, understood as the sacrifice on the one hand and the identification of 'Sarasvati' (Speech) and the 'nayika' on the other, has been shown by M.K. Byrski. These are the roots of the classification of heroes and heroines, as usual a hidden part of any phenomenon, the most difficult to discover and describe. The fruit born later, after transferring the subject into the field of 'alamkara-sastra' and love poetry, will be discussed in the present article.
