The principle behind an analysis in this article is the conviction that the theory of risk society and culture of fear theory tackle different dimensions of the same social phenomena. Culture of fear, a concept that was developed independently by Frank Furedi and Barry Glassner, has been an absent issue in the Polish sociological discourse. However, in the same discourse one can find Ulrich Beck's risk society theory, which is a perfect point of departure for presenting Glassner's and Furedi's ideas in broader context. The article's main aim is a critical reconstruction of the mentioned theories. The last section of the text contains some more general remarks on the whole research field and focuses on contemporary threats and uncertainties. .
