Following a series of analyses of the 19th-century publication of Jan Dlugosz's Liber Beneficiorum this article reassesses the earliest extant catalogue of the abbots of Mogila. That catalogue, which precedes an inventory of the benefices of that Cistercian monastery, is probably a compilation of two similar lists that have since been lost. They were, however, still available to Mikolaj of Cracow, the author of an early 16th-century monastic chronicle. An analysis of the printed edition reveals discrepancies between pairs of dates showing abbatial terms of office and the dates put against the names of individual abbots. The problem cannot be properly addressed unless one failing of the 19th-century edition, which is absolutely crucial, is made clear. Its editor distinguished neither between the graphic layout of the manuscript nor the copyists' hands. As a result he was not able to arrive at an accurate and correct reading of the catalogue of abbots. After an examination of the original manuscript the author of this article has established the sequential order in which the various portions of the texts were entered in that section of the Liber Beneficiorum. That would not have been possible without a better understanding of the copyists' modus operandi and of the way in which the individual entries were constructed gained in the course of a careful verification of Dlugosz's data against a collection matching records (diplomas) from monastic archives.Liber Beneficiorum is a most important source to the history of Malopolska in the 15th century. In so far as it is a compilation of a broad range of personal and institutional records, some sections are more dependable and therefore of greater value than others. Moreover, the flaws of the only printed edition of that book may give rise to various misinterpretations. This article, based on a thorough analysis of Dlugosz's writing techniques, offers the complete text of the catalogue of the abbots of Mogila, ie. a revised new edition of that portion of the Liber Beneficiorum.
