After the World War I we can note rise of the right extremism in Romania. The main reason of this was the increase of the number of national minorities, especially Jews. C. Z. Codreanu established the first significant extreme right organization. Its name was Legion of the Archangel Michael and it grew up in 1927. Three years later the Legion was transformed into a mass organization and since that it was called the Iron Guard. Ideology of the Iron Guard was quite specific. Such items as anti-Semitism, anti-communism or nationalism were typical for the extreme right, but especially characters as the religious mysticism or the cult of death were specific only for Romanian environment. The main supporters of the Iron Guard were students, but also retired soldiers, orthodox priests or professors. Despite of being persecuted by the state power, the Iron Guard murdered several important politicians. King Carol II wanted firstly to employ legionaries for his personal goals, but Codreanu had different ideas. In 1940-1941 the Iron Guard participated in the government of Ion Antonescu. But soon the guardists revolted against him and he finally suppressed them with the help of Nazi Germany.
