The article deals with prospects for the Polish economy. Transformation years saw considerable changes in the functioning of our economy. The process of building of the market system progressed rapidly. There are, however, also negative conditions and phenomena threatening a long-term stable growth. Therefore, further changes are necessary aimed mainly at creating a society and economy based on knowledge and enterprise which will result in reducing the gap between our country and the developed countries of the EU. Despite a huge advance achieved during the transformation period, we are still one of the least affluent countries of the European Union. Main factors that could constitute a basis for a limitation of this diversification are: Poland's population potential, considerable enterprise, level of cultural development of the society, natural environment, the structure of spatial development of the country, and the EU aid means.
