The submitted study provides a perspective of a lesser known side to the life of Živnostenská banka Director Geenral JUDr. Jaroslav Preiss, one of the major figures in the economic and political life of the first half of the 20th century, specifically his engagement with art. The article author aims above all to define the relationship of this bank manager to art in general, and further to try to capture his taste in art, and place this in the context of the interests of the Czech business elites of the time in these types of cultural objects. The paper further endeavours to reconstruct the collection of art works in his possession, which represented one of the most significatn private collections of its type in interwar Czechoslovakia, along with his extensive book collection, a collection no longer in existence. It also refers to his philanthropy, not just to the benefit of indicivual artists, but also to associations of artists.
