Program Urban Audit zapoczątkowano w 1998 roku, a jego celem było dostarczenie obiektywnych i porównywalnych danych o miastach europejskich. Jest on odpowiedzią Komisji Europejskiej (KE) na rosnące potrzeby z zakresu wsparcia informacyjnego miast. Koordynatorem programu był EUROSTAT, który organizował współpracę między krajowymi urzędami statystycznymi, samorządami terytorialnymi i organizacjami międzynarodowymi a KE. Social and economic development of Europe urban areas and constant growth of meaning of local self-government in creating this development consequently leads to the enlarged demand on reliable and comparative statistical data about urban areas. The answer for supply is the Urban Audit Programme by authorities of the European Union. It is a joint initiative of DG Regional Policy and EUROSTAT. EUROSTAT started with realisation of pilot edition of the Programme in May 1998. The target of this edition was to gather comparative information about urban areas, taking into consideration neighbourhood of urban area as well as separated fields within urban area, and as a consequence creation of data base about urban areas for the purposes of structure of the European Union and local urban authorities. 58 cities from EU-15 have participated in the pilot edition of the Programme. 258 cities from 27 countries have participated in the second phase of the Programme, implementing from 2003. On the basis of information for 336 variables calculated over 280 statistical indices describing quality of live in urban areas. In Poland, the second phase of the Urban Audit Programme was conducted by CSO in the co-operation with Statistical Offices, and especially with Centre of Urban Statistics of Statistical Office in Poznan. The project was conducted two years and was finished in June 2005. The article presents methodology of survey and also a process of data gathering, and manner of data presentation. Authors present selected information about the European urban areas and draw the attention to the future directions of works of urban statistics.
