W celu delimitacji obszarów problemowych demograficznie dokonano typologii gmin z wykorzystaniem sześciu wskaźników charakteryzujących zmiany zaludnienia w latach 1970—2002 oraz strukturę wieku i płci (w wieku 20—34 lata) ludności wiejskiej.

The article is an attempt to answer a question if the rural areas in Poland are depopulating. In the situation of decreasing intensity of outflow from rural to urban areas and relatively stable situation regarding total rural population, do we experience the depopulation problem on the bigger or smaller scale than the scale that was thought in the eighties? In order to delimitate the areas which are demographically problematic a typology was carried out using six indexes characterising the changes in population in years 1970—2002 and the age and gender structure (population aged 20—34) of rural population. The one of the known classification methods — the "furthest neighbour" method — was applied. In that method the distance among the classes is determined as a maximum distance among the observation belonging to those classes. As a result of classification procedure, eight demographical types were isolated in which three concentrated commune units of various depopulation processes level. The carried out analyses proved the usefulness of that classification methods in the scope of grouping objects similar in features interesting to researcher as well as usefulness the "furthest neighbour " method itself for typology of rural areas and delimitation unique communes, depopulating communes in that case. The isolated demographical types characterised clear difference both in the attribute of the age and gender structure and the volume of population changes in the examined period. (original abstract)
