The article presents the diversity of population change in urban agglomerations of Bielsko-Biala, compared to surrounding rural areas. The paper presents the relationship between these areas in shaping the demographic development in the years 1975-2012. Two distinct periods of change were distinguished on the basis of analyses. In the first one (years 1975-1991), urban areas grew faster, which was determined by industrialization and urbanization. In the second period (years 1992-2012), rural areas had a high population growth rate. (original abstract)
