The authoress throws new light on the photographic portraits of Frederic Chopin: the famous portrait by Louis-August Bisson, the less well-known, anonymous portrait in profile, and the daguerreotype of the portrait drawing by George Sand. The three items, bought by the Polish government in 1936, are regarded as being missing, and their fate and origin remain unclear. The authoress traces the fortunes of the daguerreotypes, as well as verifying the mistaken opinions published in the literature of the subject regarding the circumstances of their creation. She bases her reserch on archive sources and facts and not, as has been the case so far, on oral transmissions and guesses. She proposes forward different dating for these items, and she analyses the technical issues involved. She pays particular attention to the daguerreotype by Bisson, in view of its importance both in the iconography of the composer, and the history of photography.
