In this paper the authoress shows the main elements of verbal communication in Amharic that structure the sphere of personal relations in Ethiopian society. In order to reveal the inner conceptualization of the language she followed the cognitive method of analysis of source materials, which comprise almost exclusively contemporary Amharic texts. She concentrates on decoding those values that make up the linguistic picture of the world of the Amharic speaking Ethiopians. Her research confirms the importance of respect in their system of values and shows that familiarity is connected with protection and above all affection. The authoress also includes here a pattern of the forms of address most often used in Ethiopian society, which is structured on the basis of nuclear family. All those features give a picture of social relations unique to this part of the world.
