Historical politics, of both the Russian and the previous, Soviet era, is one of the most important tools serving both to build the position of Putin's Russia as a world power and to disseminate a stereotype, favourable from Russia's point of view, of the great historical processes and the particular role of Russia and the Russians in history. It is also a useful factor in spinning a web of lies over history, of which glaring proof is the dissemination and reinforcement in international opinion of the conviction that the outbreak of the Second World War resulted only from the efforts of the Third Reich, whilst the USSR merely led the efforts to liberate Europe from under the rule of Nazism. It is also a screen behind which is hidden the genocide committed by the Soviets against other nations and the crimes of communism, as well as a tool for new conquests and planned conflicts, e.g. the events surrounding the statue of the Soviet soldier in Tallinn in May 2007. Western civilisation should decisively oppose this tendency, out of concern for its own individuality and security.
