This article focuses on a work by Mikhail Zoshchenko, a well known author of humoristic novels. His autobiography 'Pered voskhodom solntsa' (Before Sunrise) has not been translated into Polish. It is a peculiar autobiographical book that includes paragraphs based on Sigmund Freuds's psychoanalysis and Ivan Pavlov's study on conditioning impacts on animate creatures. The interpretation presented is based on the innovative topic and composition of Zoshchenko's book. First, the circumstances of the text's origin are analysed, with the main focus on the author's motivation to look for the reasons of his neurosis. The following part of the text presents the unique, analytically-based model providing the basis of the author's quest for the roots of his mental problems. This view compares the relations between the author's illness, and his artistic works and personal life. It includes a critical view on Zoshchenko's faith in the omnipotent power of the human mind.
