Prostitution, in addition to hunting, fishing and root collecting, is considered to be the oldest profession of the world. On one hand, prostitution undertaken by adults as a free choice, for satisfying the sexual and material needs is not harmful for social health. It might be assumed that prostitution is not pathology because as a social phenomenon it has been existing ever since and has been socially tolerated to a greater or lesser extent. On the other hand, from the fact that prostitution affects many males and females all over the world the conclusion that it is normal and does not generate social dispute and social marking can not be drawn. The aim of the paper is not to look for a unambiguous and straightforward answer to the question posed by the title of the paper. The aim is to present the approach to prostitution as a pathology or social deviation on one hand and to understand it in terms of professional and personal choice of an adult person in prostitution, on the other.
