The paper presents a preliminary semantic description of expressions 'wolno', 'powoli', 'pomalu', 'z wolna', belonging to the adverbial class. The unit powoli1 and its contextual variant powoli1' have been distinguished. The adverb 'wolno' expresses a slow pace of an activity or process. Powoli1 can be substituted by 'wolno' almost in all contexts. Powoli1' expresses slow pace of an action but it also emphasizes the sequence of changes implied by the verb. Powoli2 is not a pace adverb. It conveys a suggestion to prepare for an action. The adverb pomalu generally appears in the same contexts as powoli(powoli1, powoli1'). It is marked as informal. The adverb z wolna expresses a slow beginning of an action.
