The article presents the outcomes of interviews carried out in 100 Polish publishers in 2004. It depicts the changes the publishers have undergone after 1989, including the changes in the publishers created by communist Polish authorities in the years 1949-1951, yet it focuses mostly on private houses founded after 1989. It provides a typology of contemporary publishing houses and a presentation of the editors' problems associated with the publishing process as well as with cooperation other institutions like warehouses and bookshops, press, radio and TV.
