This study is concerned with the editorial irregularities of the first Polish edition of Pope's John Paul II 'The Roman Triptych'. They can be spotted by comparing the printed text with the photocopied pages of the original, handwritten MS. The comparison indicates that the editors introduced far-reaching alterations to the original text. The changes appear to be the result of sloppy workmanship and are certainly unwarranted. In a number of cases they either distort the author's meaning or due to arbitrary omissions, narrow the intended scope of his poetic statement. This situation weighs heavily not only on the philological accuracy of the first Polish edition of 'The Roman Triptych' but also on subsequent reissues and translations. This problem will be addressed in another article.
